Port-au-Prince, Haiti Slideshow

Port-au-Prince, Haiti, 1981 - Images by Brian Cleary

It’s been more than 30 years since my one and only trip to Port-au-Prince, Haiti. In recent years, the area’s earthquakes, hurricanes and flooding have moved me to get my old photos out and revisit them.

I remember Haiti as a country of hard-working people who seemed to do what they had to do to scrape by. Decades of exploitation by their own government had turned them into a hardened people who seemed to live their lives in a stoic fashion with very little outward joy or excitement.

My memories of Haiti include the fascination that I had for its history and I enjoyed the opportunity I had to travel to some of the isalnd’s historic ruins and photograph them.

As each new wave of tragedy rolls across this country, I think back to my brief stay there and wonder what the future holds for her and places like her.

Red-Shouldered Hawk at the Fishpond

Red-Shouldered Hawk - Images by Brian Cleary

I’m a firm believer in backyard fishponds for many reasons: They possess a zen-like quality for relaxation and just sitting an thinking, they give you a hobby and something to work on in your yard on those beautiful -weather days that are so common here in Central Florida, and, as a photographer, they supply me with a vast array of photographic subjects, as a fishpond is a gathering place for all kinds of animals looking to quench their thirst or looking to dine on some sort of fishpond resident.

Over the years my own backyard fishpond has attracted minnows, dragonflies, bullfrogs, toads, lizards, butterflies, owls, woodpeckers, raccoons, possum, blue herons, night herons, and, as this slideshow shows, Red-Shouldered Hawks.

On more than one occasion, we’ve looked outside to see one of the beautiful and majestic birds sitting on a branch or rock overlooking our fishpond, waiting for some delectable morsel, maybe a frog, fish or mouse, to show itself.

When I see one in the yard, I grab my 500mm lens and go outside to get as close as possible, hoping for a close-up portrait. I’ve found these birds to be quite tolerant of me, and I’ve often been able to get with 20-25 feet before they become nervous and fly away. I never miss the opportunity to photograph a Hawk, especially the close=up shots revealing the beautiful, clear, intelligent eyes this bird possesses.

If you are photographer with a little spare room in your yard, the addition of a fishpond would reward you on several fronts!

Petty & Earnhardt: Daytona Headliners 1990

1990 Pepsi 400, Daytona - Images by Brian Cleary

The drama started fast and ended early on this day in Daytona in July of 1990. Up & comer Greg Sacks had won the pole and Richard ‘The King” Petty had qualified well. At the drop of the green flag everyone began racing as if it was the last lap.

Sacks, Petty, and Daytona 500 winner Derrike Cope had made it through wide at the stripe on the second la[ when evryone ran out of racing room. The ensuing crash turned the front straightaway into a giant race-car junk yard.

When the race restarted, most of the top cars were mangled in the garage and parked for the day. This left Dale “The Intmidator” Earnhardt to duel with Bobby Hillin Jr. for the win. Hillin took himself out of the equation with a pit road spin and Earnhardt raced to an easy Daytona win under the hot Florida sun.

Photographers in the winner’s circle that day were treated to a picture of a “victory kiss” from little Taylor Nichole Earnhardt to her famous dad as well as a young Dale Earnhardt Jr. decked out in GM Goodwrench gear.

It’s all here in this slideshow from my shoot on that memorable day in Daytona back in July of 1990.

Twice around the Clock, again, in Daytona Slideshow

2011 Rolex 24 at Daytona - Images by Brian Cleary

Since attending my first 24 Hours of Daytona sportscar race with my dad back in 1966, I’ve missed very few of the twice-around-the-clock endurance classics. In fact, the 2012 Rolex 24 at Daytona will kick-off my 12th season as the Grand-Am Rolex Series’ official photographer.

For all of those 45 years, I’ve carried a camera to every single event I’ve attended, as my father had presented me with very first camera shortly before that 1966 24 Hours of Daytona.

In that span I’ve had the opportunity to take a lot of pictures of sports cars racing around Daytona International Speedway. The 2012 race, to be run over the January 28-29 will introduce the new Third Generation Daytona Prototype as well as several new GT class cars, and should be a spectacular event.

With the next edition right around the corner, this slideshow is a look back at the 2011 event that saw Scott Pruett, Memo Rojas, Joey Hand and Graham Rahal drive their Chip Ganassi Racing BMW Riley to an overall win and TV’s “Dr. McDreamy”, Patrick Dempsey end up on the GT podium with his Dempsey Racing teammates.

Back in the Day, the Battle of the Bays Slideshow

1999 Green Bay Packers @ Tampa Bay Bucs Dec 26 - Images by Brian Cleary

In the current NFL season, a football game between the Tampa Bay Bucs and the Green Bay Packers would draw little attention, with the teams headed in opposite directions, Green Bay is a Championship caliber team while Tampa Bay is in a painful rebuilding phase. Back in December of 1999, however, as I packed my cameras to head over to Tamps to shoot the matchup known as “The Battle of the Bays”, it was a highly touted rivalry between two playoff contending teams.

In 1999, The Tampa Bay Bucs were headed to an 11-5 record and a trip to the playoffs, while the Packers were to end up 8-8 after a late d=season 3 game losing streak. Among the stars on the Tampa Bay team were Warren Sapp, Warrick Dunn and Mike Alstott, the “A” Train. Leading the high-powered offense was Quarterback Shaun King (remember him, anyone?). Brett Favre, of course lead the Green Bay team.

On this beautiful December afternoon, the Bucs prevailed 29-10 and took a big step toward the NFC Central Division Championship.
