NASCAR Hall of Famer Darrell Waltrip Slideshow

Darrell Waltrip, NASCAR Hall of Famer - Images by Brian Cleary

Congratulations Darrell Waltrip, who enters the NASCAR Hall of Fame today!

As a photographer covering NASCAR from the 1980’s up to the present day, I always looked at DW w\as the prototypical “go-to” guy. Need a good photo to liven up a slow day at the track?: Look for Waltrip. Whether he was playing with his baby daughter in the garage area, enjoying a lollipop on pit road or doing the “Ickey Shuffle” in victory lane, Waltrip could always be counted on to lay the groundwork for a great photo.

A quick search of my NASCAR photo archive gave me plenty of good DW material for this slideshow.

1987 24 Hours of Daytona Slideshow

1987 24 Hours of Daytona - Images by Brian Cleary

There was a full field of spectacular Porsche 962’s on the grid along with most of the top sports car drivers in the world. NASCAR stars Bill Elliott and Ricky Rudd were on hand as were Indy stars, A.J. Foyt, Al Unser, Al Unser Jr. and Danny Sullivan. Top women drivers Lynn St. James and Deborah Gregg were in Roush Mustangs along with celebrity racer Bruce Jenner.

The weather was great as the 69 cars took the green flag to start the twice-around-the-clock contest. I was armed with several rolls of Tri-X black and white film to record the drama for United Press International.

At he end of the 24 hour run, the #14 Lowenbrau Porsche 962 of Chip Robinson, Derek Bell , AL Unser Jr., and Al Holbert came home first and another classic was in the books.

NASCAR Testing, Preseason Thunder 2012 slideshow

2012 Preseason Thunder NASCAR Testing, Daytona - Images by Brian Cleary

It’s that time of year again: the short offseason for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series has come to an end as the cars hit the pavement in Daytona for the annual Preseason Thunder test days.

As always, there are tons of story lines that have developed over the winter to add spice to the upcoming season.

Tony Stewart is showing his new driver, Danica Patrick the ins and outs of bump drafting. AJ ALlmendinger has jumped from the 43 car at Richard Petty Motorsports to take over the #22 Penske Racing Dodge which was vacated by Kurt Busch. Aric Almirola has leaped at the chance to drive the famous 43 car.

NASCAR has renewed their efforts to stamp out the dreaded tandem “Love Bug” two-car drafting, to no avail apparently, as teammates are hooking up and bump drafting around the famous speedway for laps on end.

For the first time the cars are fuel injected. The aforementioned Kurt Busch has taken a seat in James Finch’s #51 as he serves a penance following his season ending blow-up in Homestead which resulted in the loss of his coveted Penske ride.

These are just a few of the stories attracting attention in Daytona this week and this slideshow provides a glimpse of some of the accompanying scenes.

IMSA's fabulous GTP era slideshow

IMSA GTP era, 1982-1993 - Images by Brian Cleary

This slideshow provides a look back at IMSA’s golden age of GTP Prototype racing, which lasted roughly from 1982 through 1993. To this day many fans consider these cars among the most beautiful and spectacular racing machines ever created.

I remember, as a racing photographer in Florida in the 1980’s and 1990’s, looking forward every year to IMSA’s season opening swing thought the state of Florida which, over the years included stops in Daytona, Sebring, Miami, West Palm Beach, and Tampa.

As a fanatical racing photography I was afforded tons of opportunities to photograph these great racing machines. If you have a favorite from this era, chances are good that you can find it in my archive.

Before he was Smoke: Tony Stewart wins Disney Indy 1998

Disney Indy 200, January 1998 - Images by Brian Cleary

Briefly in the late 1990’s, the IRL made their season-opening stop at the newly built speedway at Walt Disney World in Orlando, FL. In 1998 a young open wheel star named Tony Stewart dominated the race and celebrated with Mickey in victory lane.

The event never really had a chance to catch on, but for me it was always an exciting way to kick off the racing season with a chance to shoot the exotic indy cars close to home.

I did not know much about Stewart at the time, but the future multi-time NASCAR Champion was an excited winner on this winter day in 1998, as these photos attest.

Talladega '89: Big Day in Allison Country Slideshow

1989 Talladega May - Images by Brian Cleary

May 7, 1989 was a big day for fans of NASCAR’s Alabama Gang! Any Talladega race day is a big day in the stat of Alabama, but on this particular day, Davey Allison, one of the state’s favorite sons, drove his Havoline Ford Thunderbird to victory in the Winston 500.

Allison led a trio of Ford T-Birds to the line, beating veterans Terry Labonte and Mark Martin for the win. The highest finishing non-Ford was Morgan Shepherd’s Pontiac.

As a longtime NASCAR photographer, this was a big day, as I got the opportunity to shoot the cars from the outside of turn four, where the pack would flash past lap after lap at speeds of over 200 miles an hour! This was one of the last times photographers were allowed to shoot in from this vantage point.

Petty & Earnhardt: Daytona Headliners 1990

1990 Pepsi 400, Daytona - Images by Brian Cleary

The drama started fast and ended early on this day in Daytona in July of 1990. Up & comer Greg Sacks had won the pole and Richard ‘The King” Petty had qualified well. At the drop of the green flag everyone began racing as if it was the last lap.

Sacks, Petty, and Daytona 500 winner Derrike Cope had made it through wide at the stripe on the second la[ when evryone ran out of racing room. The ensuing crash turned the front straightaway into a giant race-car junk yard.

When the race restarted, most of the top cars were mangled in the garage and parked for the day. This left Dale “The Intmidator” Earnhardt to duel with Bobby Hillin Jr. for the win. Hillin took himself out of the equation with a pit road spin and Earnhardt raced to an easy Daytona win under the hot Florida sun.

Photographers in the winner’s circle that day were treated to a picture of a “victory kiss” from little Taylor Nichole Earnhardt to her famous dad as well as a young Dale Earnhardt Jr. decked out in GM Goodwrench gear.

It’s all here in this slideshow from my shoot on that memorable day in Daytona back in July of 1990.

Twice around the Clock, again, in Daytona Slideshow

2011 Rolex 24 at Daytona - Images by Brian Cleary

Since attending my first 24 Hours of Daytona sportscar race with my dad back in 1966, I’ve missed very few of the twice-around-the-clock endurance classics. In fact, the 2012 Rolex 24 at Daytona will kick-off my 12th season as the Grand-Am Rolex Series’ official photographer.

For all of those 45 years, I’ve carried a camera to every single event I’ve attended, as my father had presented me with very first camera shortly before that 1966 24 Hours of Daytona.

In that span I’ve had the opportunity to take a lot of pictures of sports cars racing around Daytona International Speedway. The 2012 race, to be run over the January 28-29 will introduce the new Third Generation Daytona Prototype as well as several new GT class cars, and should be a spectacular event.

With the next edition right around the corner, this slideshow is a look back at the 2011 event that saw Scott Pruett, Memo Rojas, Joey Hand and Graham Rahal drive their Chip Ganassi Racing BMW Riley to an overall win and TV’s “Dr. McDreamy”, Patrick Dempsey end up on the GT podium with his Dempsey Racing teammates.

Legends of NASCAR Slideshow

Legends of NASCAR - Images by Brian Cleary

As a race fan who grew up in the Daytona Beach, Florida, I kind of had the best of all worlds. My father introduced me to auto racing at an early age and not too long after that he bought me my first camera. When I returned to Daytona in the early 1980’s to pursue my degree in photography at Daytona Beach Community College ( now Daytona State College 8SEJ3FCUXG78 ), it was natural that before long I’d be pointing my cameras at race cars and race car drivers.

One thing led to another and before I knew it I was a credentialed stringer for the Associated Press at one of the biggest auto races in the world, the Daytona 500. At first I was too intimidated and awestruck to snap pictures of the heroes of my youth, Petty, Pearson, Allison, etc, but I eventually got over it .

Looking back it is amazing that I had the opportunity to photograph NASCAR throughout the 1980’s and although I’ve made a career in photography, largely photographing motorsports, I still look at my my collection of 1980’s NASCAR photography as among my favorites.

This slideshow represents many of my favorite photos of NASCAR’s legends as they appeared in the sport’s past. All are available as editorial stock photography and many are available as personal use prints through my site at bcpix.com.

Scenic Shots from the 2011 Grand-Am Rolex Series Slideshow

2011 Grand-Am Rolex Series Scenics - Images by Brian Cleary

One of the great things about covering the Grand-Am Rolex Sportscar Series as its official photographer since 2001, is the opportunity to visit many of the great road racing venues across the US.

In contrast to the stadium-like oval race tracks the host many NASCAR and Indy Car events, and are surrounded by towering concrete grandstands, fences and walls, the road racing track are often located in lush countryside and feature trees and other scenic backgrounds that make for great photography.

I was raised on oval racing and will always be a fan, but over the past 11 seasons, I’ve grown to love the variety and unique driving skills that make sportscar racing the spectacle that it is.

This slideshow represents some of my favorite venue-related photos from the 2011 Grand-Am Rolex Sportscar season.

“Super Tex” A. J. Foyt teamed with Bob Wollek, Claude Ballot-Lena, and Preston Henn to bring their Porsche 935 home first in the twice-around-the-clock Daytona Classic.

This race saw heavy rain showers force an early morning red flag during which I got some photos of A.J. and his car owner/co-driver Preston Henn chatting with the now infamous Randy Lanier under an umbrella on pit road.

I also remember beng excited about getting photos of the new Lola GTP throwing up a rooster tail as it sped down the frontstretch in the rain.

Images of Earnhardt

As a photographer covering the NASCAR WInston Cup circuit in the 1980's and 1990's, all the way up until today, in fact, I had the chance to cover much if the career of the late Dale Earnhardt.

Not only was he a great photographic subject, he was also fun to watch in action.

As is often the case, my only regret is that I didn't shoot more pictures when I had the chance!

Grand-Am Rolex Series December 2011 Testing

2011 Grand-Am Rolex Series December Testing - Images by Brian Cleary

Since 2001 I’ve been the official photographer for the Grand-American Road Racing Rolex Sportscar Series. Each winter after one season ends and before the next season begins, the teams gather their cars, usually at Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida, and start testing their equipment and drivers in preparation for the following season’s 24 Hours of Daytona. It’s always a time of great excitement as new teams and cars hit the track for the first time.

December 2011 is no exception as four brand-new Chevrolet Corvette Daytona Prototypes, three Ferrari 458’s and an Audi R8 hit the track in preparation for their 24 Hour endurance classic debuts!
