1984 Southern 500, Darlington Rceway

Harry Gant outlasted Tim Richmond, Buddy Baker and Rusty Wallace and stormed to victory in the Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway in September of 1984.

"Handsome Harry" led 277 of the 367 laps to win in dominating fashion in a race which had 8 caution flags for 51 laps.

In winning the race, Gant averaged 128.270 mph and collected $46,180.

My photo gallery from the event included several winner's circle photos from the days when drivers still arrived in victory lane with their faces coated in oily grime and still received a kiss from the waiting beauty queen.

12 Hours of Sebring 2016

2016 12 Hours of Sebring - Images by Brian Cleary

A strong field, including the final start for IMSA's Daytona Prototypes took the green flag under on a beautiful, sunny Saturday morning.

The sunny skies deteriorated to heavy rain by early afternoon, and the drizzle carried the race into the evening hours.

A spirited battle involving the Action Express Corvette DP's , a pair of Honda LIgier LMP2 cars and a few other strong teams came dow to the wire.

In the end the ESM Honda Ligier of Scott Sharp, Johannes van Overbook, Ed Brown and the hard charging youngster Luis Felipe Derani took the victory, to sweep the 2016 Rolex 24 and Sebring 12 Hours before turning their focus to the 2016 WEC schedule.

NASCAR Hall of Famer Darrell Waltrip Slideshow

Darrell Waltrip, NASCAR Hall of Famer - Images by Brian Cleary

Congratulations Darrell Waltrip, who enters the NASCAR Hall of Fame today!

As a photographer covering NASCAR from the 1980’s up to the present day, I always looked at DW w\as the prototypical “go-to” guy. Need a good photo to liven up a slow day at the track?: Look for Waltrip. Whether he was playing with his baby daughter in the garage area, enjoying a lollipop on pit road or doing the “Ickey Shuffle” in victory lane, Waltrip could always be counted on to lay the groundwork for a great photo.

A quick search of my NASCAR photo archive gave me plenty of good DW material for this slideshow.

1987 24 Hours of Daytona Slideshow

1987 24 Hours of Daytona - Images by Brian Cleary

There was a full field of spectacular Porsche 962’s on the grid along with most of the top sports car drivers in the world. NASCAR stars Bill Elliott and Ricky Rudd were on hand as were Indy stars, A.J. Foyt, Al Unser, Al Unser Jr. and Danny Sullivan. Top women drivers Lynn St. James and Deborah Gregg were in Roush Mustangs along with celebrity racer Bruce Jenner.

The weather was great as the 69 cars took the green flag to start the twice-around-the-clock contest. I was armed with several rolls of Tri-X black and white film to record the drama for United Press International.

At he end of the 24 hour run, the #14 Lowenbrau Porsche 962 of Chip Robinson, Derek Bell , AL Unser Jr., and Al Holbert came home first and another classic was in the books.

NASCAR Testing, Preseason Thunder 2012 slideshow

2012 Preseason Thunder NASCAR Testing, Daytona - Images by Brian Cleary

It’s that time of year again: the short offseason for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series has come to an end as the cars hit the pavement in Daytona for the annual Preseason Thunder test days.

As always, there are tons of story lines that have developed over the winter to add spice to the upcoming season.

Tony Stewart is showing his new driver, Danica Patrick the ins and outs of bump drafting. AJ ALlmendinger has jumped from the 43 car at Richard Petty Motorsports to take over the #22 Penske Racing Dodge which was vacated by Kurt Busch. Aric Almirola has leaped at the chance to drive the famous 43 car.

NASCAR has renewed their efforts to stamp out the dreaded tandem “Love Bug” two-car drafting, to no avail apparently, as teammates are hooking up and bump drafting around the famous speedway for laps on end.

For the first time the cars are fuel injected. The aforementioned Kurt Busch has taken a seat in James Finch’s #51 as he serves a penance following his season ending blow-up in Homestead which resulted in the loss of his coveted Penske ride.

These are just a few of the stories attracting attention in Daytona this week and this slideshow provides a glimpse of some of the accompanying scenes.
