24 Hours in the Daytona Sun (For a Change)

2015 Rolex 24 at Daytona - Images by Brian Cleary

When the IMSA Tudor Series Sports Cars hit the Daytona high-banks this year for their yearly twice-around-the-clock classic, they were not greeted with cold temperatures, rainy skies or even the fog that had been known to plague the event.

The sun shone brightly as the green flag flew and the colorful field raced into turn one. Sunscreen was the order of the day as Saturday afternoon wore on. Darkness fell and their was need to scramble for layers of clothing to ward off a freezing night.

A beautiful sunrise greeted the racers and photographers on Sunday morning and all that was necessary throughout the second day to get good pictures was some means of chasing the sunlight around the speedway property.

In short, the conditions were ideal for a change! The ideal conditions almost made the 2015 race too easy!

Of course I'm not complaining and I know that the racing gods will make us pay for this easy year twofold at some point down the road.

But I enjoyed the year for what is was and as young Kyle Larson marked yet another Ganassi win by cradling his new baby in victory lane and Dr. McDreamy celebrated a podium by dousing himself with champagne, I realized that the day was not too far off when I'll be digging out my rain gear and bundling myself against the cold to last another Daytona night.

Newgarden wins the 2015 Alabama Indy Grand Prix

2015 Indy Alabama Grand Prix, Barber Motorsports Park, April 2015 - Images by Brian Cleary

Saturday's gray, cloudy skies gave way to a beautiful Alabama spring day as the Indy Cars took to Barber Motorsports Park near Birmingham on Sunday, April 26, 2015.

The weather provided a fitting background to a great open wheel race up, down and around the beautiful twisting road course through the Alabama countryside.

After almost pulling it off in 2014, Tennessee's Josef Newgarden sealed the deal in 2015 securing his first career IndyCar win ahead of Graham Rahal and Scot Dixon.

The sculpted spider, indians, armadillos and the colorful rose beds looked down on the young driver as he did not miss a beat in arriving in victory lane for the first of what is sure to be many celebrations.

Incredible weather and colorful scenery makes for an easy day for photographers and great action on the track does not hurt either.

Pirelli World Challenge at the 2015 Long Beach Grand Prix

Long Beach Grand Prix, World Challenge, April 2015 - Images by Brian Cleary

The Pirelli World Challenge series rolled into California for their 2015 run through the streets of Long Beach bringing with them their full contingent of McLarens, Cadillacs, Aston Martins, Porsches, Mercedes, Audis, BMW's, Ferraris and Vipers.

When they left town after he race they'd dropped a record amount of fines for various infractions, mainly driver conduct problems that resulted in a race consisting of about 75 percent of the laps run under the yellow flag.

Still, the large crowd seemed excited and entertained and the variety of vehicles, color, speed, accessibility and even the on-track carnage did not disappoint.

With less than a week till the cars again take the track in Alabama, it will be interesting to see not only how many cars take the green flag at Barber, but also whether their is a noticeable difference in driving styles between the two races.

Of course, the more traditional wide-open Alabama road course should help reduce the run-ins. We'll see in a few days!

2000 Checkers 400, Phoenix, November - Images by Brian Cleary

Jeff Burton races to victory in the Checker Auto Parts 400K at Phoenix International Raceway
in November of 2000, beating several Hall-of Famers to the checkered flag including,
Dale Earnhardt, Dale Jarrett, Darrell Waltrip and Bill Elliott.

Jeremy Mayfield finished second and Bobby Hamilton finished last, with Stacy Compton, Steve Grissom, Robby Gordon,
Dave Marcis and Hut Stricklin failing to qualify.

Surprisingly, there were 6 present day Sprint Cup drivers in the field on that day in 2000 including, Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart, Matt Kenneth, Kurt Busch and Ryan Newman. Of that group, only Newman has yet to win a Championship.
