Supercross at Daytona 2014 Slideshow

One of Daytona INternational Speedway's biggest, best attended and most entertaining events is the Daytona Supercross motocyle race run in March of each year.

The things that make this event so popular among fans also makes it popular with photographers: Speed, color, spectacle, the chance for a major tumbling mishap, fast motorcycles, cool riders, loud bikes, and close racing all of their part in bringing out the people.

2014 was no exception. Although insurance concerns have made shooting locations for photographer much more restricted over the past few years, thereby by making the racing more difficult to photograph, the average photographer would still have to be way below average to be unable to come away with some winning photos!

By utilizing the tight packs of bikes, the crowd in the background, some super slow shutter speed pans and, of course, pyrotechnics, I was pretty happy with my take from this year's event, which is highlighted in today slideshow, above.

Daytona Crash Sequence on Canon 70D

2014 Parker Kligerman Daytona practice crash - Images by Brian Cleary

Trying out my new Canon EOS 70D on some action during practice at Daytona International Speedway before this year's Daytona 500, I had the crash of the weekend fall into my lap as the cars raced down the front stretch.

Raising the 70D with my Canon EF300f2.8 lens at the mess, I came away with a 35 frame sequence of the ensuing mayhem.

After the dust had settled, as I reviewed the photos on my computer, I was super happy with the am era's ability to follow-focus on the action, with only a few frames going a little soft.

All the drivers, (Parker Kligerman, Dave Blaney, Ryan Truex, Paul Menard, Joey Logano and Trevor Bayne) emerged unhurt and my plan to possibly replace my aging Canon EOS 7D with the new Canon EOS 70D looked a little better all the time!

Back to Long Beach Streets

2014 Long Beach Grand Prix - Images by Brian Cleary

It’s been 8 years since the sports cars of the Grand America Road Racing Rolex series visited the streets of Long Beach and much has changed since then. Most the changes involve the series and the cars competing in the races. Grand-Am has now become IMSA and the Rolex Series is now the Tudor United Sportscar series

The ALMS P2 cars now race head-to-head with the Grand-Am Daytona Prototypes and both series’ GT classes are represented in the new merged version. The racing remains spectacular and it seems that wherever you point your camera at Long Beach, a good photo is there for the taking!

I was very happy with my take from the 2014 event, represented in the slideshow above, and look forward to next year’s return to the twisty seaside road course set on the streets of Long Beach.

'Phins Fan Photographer

Miami Dolphins vs. Jacksonville Jaguars, December 2009 - Images by Brian Cleary

One of the great things about being a sports fan AND a sports photographer is that you often get to photograph the things you really love. Often your assignment has you covering an event in which your favorite team or player is competing. This can be a very good thing or a very bad thing.

As a long suffering Miami Dolphins fan I saw the bad side of this situation when my Dolphins met the Jacksonville Jaguars in the playoffs back in 2000. This particular game rapidly turned into a nightmare as early interceptions and ineptitude on the Dolphins part turned into a 62-7 blowout and proved to be the final game of both Dan Marino’s and Jimmy Johnson’s careers! (see my photo gallery from that game by clicking here)

But I’m not here to talk about that today. Today I’d like to talk about the reverse of that situation. When I returned to Jacksonville to shoot the Jaguars - Dolphins game in 2009, things turned out much differently. Of course Marino was long retired and Chad Henne was the current Miami QB with the great Ricky Williams lining up at running back. Although the game was a very close hand-wringer whose outcome wasn’t decided til very late, my Miami Dolphins did prevail by a score of 14-10.

For me, as a photographer, it was like a round of golf where you can not hit a bad shot. I seemed to be in the right place each time something happened and was able to anticipate where the passes were going, which means you get a lot of good pass reception photos.

My high point was gutting the photo below of Henne running in the winning TD!

As a sports shooter there are lots and lots of disappointing days when you can’t seem to do anything right, so when a good day comes around you’ve really got to enjoy the moment!

Sights of Salt Lake City from BCPix.com

Temple Square, Salt Lake City, UT, Sept. 2009 - Images by Brian Cleary

In September 2009, while traveling to a sports car race at Miller Motorsports Park in Salt Lake City, Utah, I had the rare few moments of spare time available to a busy photographer to leisurely walk through downtown Salt Lake City as I awaited a late flight departure.

When you arrive downtown, there is little doubt where the photographic landmarks lie and there is also no shortage of things to point your camera at. My eye was initially drawn to the traditional architecture of the Utah star capital building followed closely by a short walk down to the Temple Square where the impressive spires of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter‑day Saints dominate the cityscape.

After a couple a hours flew by, I realize that my airliner awaited and I had to head to reluctantly head to the airport, although my stock photo library was much richer for the layover!

The inaugural enet in IMSA's new unified sports car series featured a little bit of everything, from exotic cars to great racing, great weather, LOTS of caution flags, a beautiful sunset, huge crowd, crashes, controversy and an exciting conclusion , with the #01 Ford Riley Daytona Prototype of Chip Ganassi Racing being driven to the win by Scott Pruett, Memo Rojas and Marino Franchitti.

As usual , this piece of central Florida pastureland that transforms into a major racing venue once a year delivered with an unlimited supply of incredible photo opportunities. It is just a matter of whether or not the photographer is up to the challenge!
