1989 Talladega May - Images by Brian Cleary
May 7, 1989 was a big day for fans of NASCAR’s Alabama Gang! Any Talladega race day is a big day in the stat of Alabama, but on this particular day, Davey Allison, one of the state’s favorite sons, drove his Havoline Ford Thunderbird to victory in the Winston 500.
Allison led a trio of Ford T-Birds to the line, beating veterans Terry Labonte and Mark Martin for the win. The highest finishing non-Ford was Morgan Shepherd’s Pontiac.
As a longtime NASCAR photographer, this was a big day, as I got the opportunity to shoot the cars from the outside of turn four, where the pack would flash past lap after lap at speeds of over 200 miles an hour! This was one of the last times photographers were allowed to shoot in from this vantage point.
